October 2020 Stitch of the Month

 

The Ridge (rib) Stitch. 

 This stitch is used mostly for Afghans, but you can also use it for potholders, hot mats, and using thread, even doilies.  You can use any type of yarn, for example, if  you wanted to make a baby Afghan, just use baby or sport weight yarn. You can make it all one color, or several colors.


This is worked on any number of stitches, just measure the area you want an afghan for, and chain that length.

So for this sample, chain 25.

 Starting row:

Sk 1 ch, Sc in each Sc across. Ch 1, turn.

 All rows:  Working in back loops ONLY, sc in each sc across row. Ch 1, turn.

You can change colors at the end of each row, and leave a long tail, then after several rows, tie or knot two or three tails together. Or using the same color, do three rows, and  tie these together. (If you are making this for a baby, I  wouldn't leave a tail at the end, baby fingers could get tangled up in them.)

Materials:

1 ball Peaches and Crème art 930H, # 31 Shocking Pink
1 pair size 8 knitting needles
2 stitch markers
1 row counter.

Note: Slip markers as you come to them.



Cast on 32 for Med, for large cast on 35.

Row 1: Knit 3, place marker, knit to last 3 stitches, place marker, knit 3

Rows: 2  to 4 Knit

Row 5: K 3, p 2. * with yarn in back, slip 1 as if to k. p 2 *: repeat from * to , K 3.

Row 6: K 3, k 2. * with yarn in front, slip1 as if to p. k 2 *: repeat from * to , K 3

Row 7: Knit.

Row 8: K 3, Purl to last 3 stitches, K 3.

Repeat rows 5 to 8 11 times, then rows 5 to 7.

Knit 4 rows, fasten off weave in threads.
