March 2013 Pattern of the Month ~ Knit



Heather's Ear Flap Ski Hat

This pattern was done for my my niece, who needed a hat to cover her ears.
Materials:
            1 pair size 3 double pointed needles, 1 pair size 3 knitting needles
            1 pair size 7 double pointed needles
            1 pair size 7 circular needles

            1 row counter
            1 set needle protectors
            1 skein each Red Heart Sport weight yarn, purple, lavender, red, black.
            1 skein Sophie (color 71-1953 purple, black, aqua, blue)
            1 skein Paton's Twister

Ear Flaps: with size 3 double pointed needles cast on 3 stitches, work I chain for 20 inches. Change to size 7 needles.

Note: to make an I chain or cord, using a double point needle, cast on 3 stitches, then knit these stitches, do not turn, push the stitches to the other end of the needle, and knit again, keep doing this until you have desired lenth, pulling down on the bottom of cord.

Row 1: knit one row

Row 2: K1, inc 1, k1, inc 1, k1.

Row 3: K2, purl to last two stitches, k 2.

Row 4: k 2, inc 1, k to last 2 stitches, inc 1, k2.

Repeat rows 3 & 4 till 9 stitches on needles, end with row 3, drop purple, attach red.

Repeat rows 3 and 4, working 2 rows red, and two purple until you have 21 stitches. Stop increase and work row 3 and 4 until you have total of 4 red strips ending with two rows purple. Cut yarn, place on holder, work second ear flap the same way.

Change to size 7 circular needles,

Cast on 12 stitches, work 21 stitches from one ear flap, cast on 42 stitches, work 21 stitches from other ear flap, cast on 12 stitches (108 total), join, being careful not to twist stitches.

With purple K1, P1 for 4 rows.

Start chart.  
Notes:
Decease 12 stitches evenly around on round 30 only. Change to double point needles when needed.
for Chart below purple square are left blank. P after a number = purl.

Rd 37 knit.

Rd 38  K 1, k 2 tog around.

Rd 39 knit

Rd 40:  K 2 tog.

Run needle thru remaining stitches, draw up tight, run needle thru again, fasten off, weave in the threads.

Love this hat! I am almost ready to try and knit again! But, the color changing that I'm looking at on your hat's Is scaring me!! Knitted stuff is so pretty though.
