Kira's Ocean Scarf

 Kira's Ocean Wave Scarf

by N Banks 20221

Rigid Heddle Pattern

10 dent heddle

warp was 95 inches long, with 76 warp ends.

7 inches wide,  65 inches long  and 4 inches of fringe at each end.

plain weave

I hemmed stitched it at the beginning and end before taking off the loom.

For the warp I used a sport weight red heart yarn in a pale green color but I would say it was more like an aqua marine color than pale green which is why I used it.

Weft  yarn

I used four colors

1. Red heart ombre in scuba

2. Baby Bee Aqua Marbled

3. Red Heart white

4. Snowflake in white.

I just wove it plain and charged colors when I wanted to,  starting with the dark Red Heart Scuba, then the baby bee aqua, then white and then the snowflake ( top of wave)

Pattern Notes: I didn't count the rows but did keep track of the inches as I moved along. I use a wide 2 inch ribbon for a rule,  (saved from a blanket from Walmart)  I just marked off each 1 inch section. I also use a paper towel cardboard cut up the middle to cover the tie on knots.  Also when sleying the reed I tie of sections of the warp with a very loose overhand knot just in case the reed falls off the loom while I am working.

I like to do a color card with the names and samples of the yarn that I use. Below is a picture of the color for this scarf.  Sometimes on the back I will add details about the draft or pick up pattern I am using or any other information I may need. (clip on it holds more cards from other projects I have done)

Before staring I like to mark off my reed like below. It shows were I start to slay the reed and were I need to end it.

Below are some pictures as I worked on it

Starting to weave  and it also shows the paper towel roll I use to cover the knots, you can see them on the tie on (above) picture.

I also like to do a sheet with the name of the person I am making it for and figuring out the math etc part of it. On it I will list information about the yarns, which one to start with etc.  The pickup pattern if I am using one. I keep it by my loom and work from it as I go. Also number of warp ends and length of the warp.  This way I can re-figure it if I need to or use the information on the sheet of paper for another project.  See below

Tied on, warp separated, eight rows done, and the hem stitch done, when I tie on I use groups or bundles of 6 threads.

Below is a picture of the reed with ties I use to mark the center of the loom. This was for a scarf I had made.

Pick up pattern ( heddle in the down position )

White only 1 up, 2 down, under all colored threads
