This is the second pattern I’ve made for the Maine hat
Charity. As I design some simple hats, I will be posting them on my blog, hope
you make lots of hats.
Worsted Weight yarn, any color. I used a deep red.
Size 5 & 7 circular knitting needles, 16 inches long
Row counter, 10 stitch markers and a yarn needle
Using size 5 circular
knitting needles, cast on 100
Rds 1 to 7: Knit
2, Purl 2 around
Rds 8, 9, 10, 11, 12: Knit 5, Purl 5
Rds 13, 14, 15, 16,
17: Purl 5, Knit 5
Repeat rounds 8 to 173 times, on last round place markers after every 10th stitch.
Top of hat
Rd 1: knit to 2
stitches before marker, knit 2 stitches together,
Before finish of top of hat
Repeat round 1 until you have 10 stitches left, change to
size 7 double pointed needles needed. Cut yarn leaving a long tail, with a yarn
needle, run yarn through remaining stitches and pull up tight, work ends of

1 Skein each: Red Heart 310 Monet 358 Lavender 1 set #5 double pointed needles (or 5 straight needles) 1 set #8 double pointed needles (or 8 straight needles) (see bottom of pattern)
Gauge: On size 8 double pointed needles: Using Straight Stitch 4 stitches equal one inch, and 5 rows equal one inch.
1. With Lavender, and #5 double pointed needles, cast on 32 stitches, K2, P2 for 2 1/2 inches, change to size 8 double pointed needles, and inc 10 stitches evenly around. (42 stitches)
2. Knit 6 rows in straight stitch, attach Monet, and work in pattern below.
3. Pattern: Starting with Monet, knit 2 rows, then work 4 rows in lavender, until you have repeat these rows, 9 times, (you'll have nine repeats of color monet.) (if you want leg warmers for a larger child, add more repeats of the pattern.
4. Fasten off Monet, and knit 6 rows of lavender, last row dec. 32 stitches., and do k2, p2 for 2 1/2 inches, Cast off very loosely, using the larger needles. You will want these to fit over the thigh or just under the knee.
This pattern can be worked on straight needles, just work back and forth, following the pattern, when done, sew back seam. Make 2.

Chain 34, turn.
Rows 2-33:. sc 33, chain 1, turn.
Row 34: . fold fabric vertically and sc side shut from sides to fold, trim to 6 inches an cut.
Row 35: sc other side shut going from fold to sides, chain 3, *dc, chain 1* around entire top, trim to 6 inches and cut. Hide ends.
Make 2 ties of chain 60 with 3 inch trims or use 2 18-inch long pieces of ribbon to lace up slippers.
