twisted stitch

Multiplies of 3 + 1

for sample cast on 25 ( 3 x 8 = 24 + 1 = 25)

Also slip the first stitch

  Twisted Stitch  (ts 2):  skip 1 stitch, but DO NOT remove it from the left hand needle, knit the next stitch, the new loop is on the right hand needle, now knit the first stitch that you skipped, it is now on the right hand needle and just let the two stitches on the left hand needle drop.

Row 1: * k 1, ts 2, repeat from * across row, end with k 1.

Row 2: purl.

Repeat these two rows until desired length.

Materials Required: 

American thread company Puritan Crochet cotton or star spangled crochet 1 ball white or 2 balls silver spangle and 1 ball each shaded purples and shaded yellows.

 Steel crochet hook No. 7 

 Center: with white or silver spangle ch 6, join to form a ring. Ch 5, dc in ring, * ch2, dc in righ, repeat from * 5 times, ch 2, join in 3rd st of ch. 

 2nd rd sl st into loop, ch 3, 3dc in same space, *4 dc in next loop, repeat from * all around, join. 

 3rd rd *ch 5, skip 1 dc, slst in next dc, repeat form * all around ending with ch2, dc in same space as beginning ( this brings thread in position for next round). 

 4th rd *ch 5, slst in next loop, repeat from * all around ending with ch5, sl st in dc. 

 5th rd sl st into loop, ch 3, 3dc in same spae, *ch1, 4dc in next loop, repeat from * all around, ch 1, join. 

 6th rd ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 3dc, * ch4, 1 dc in each of the next 4 dc, repeat from * all around, ch 4, join.

 Pansy: with shaded yellows, ch 7 to form a ring, ch 3, 2dc in ring, * ch 7, 3 dc in ring, repeat from * 3 times, ch 7, join in 3rd st of ch, cut thread. 

 2nd rd attach shaded purples in center of dc of any 3 dc group, sc in same space, * 16 dc in next loop, sc in center of dc of next 3 dc group, repeat from * twice, ch 4, 12 d tr c *(3x over needle) with ch 1 between each d trc in next loop, ch 1, 2 trc with ch 1 between in same loop, ch 1, 2 dc with ch 1 between in same loop, sc in center dc of next 3 dc group, 2dc with ch 1 between in next loop, ch 1, 2 trc with ch 1 between in same loop, ch 1, 12 d tr c with ch 1, between each d tr c in same loop, ch 4, join in 1 st sc, cut thread. 

Work 7 more pansies in same manner, work 8 pansies in same manner working  1st row in shaded purples and 2nd row in shaded yellows.

 Edge: attach sliver spangle in ch 4 loop of 1st large petal of yellow pansy, * ch 3, sc in next ch 1 space, repeat from * 1 4x, sc in next sc between petals, sc in next ch 1 space of next large petal of same pansy, * ch 3, sc in next ch 1 sp, repeat from * 13x, ch 3, sc in ch 4 loop of same large petal, sc in 1 st ch 4, loop of purple pansy, work ch 3 loops across the 2 large petals same as on previous pansy.

Continue working edge and joining pansies in same manner alternating colors until all pansies are joined, cut thread, leaving an end. 

 To join pansies to center: attach sliver spangle in middle dc of any dc group of enter, sc in same space, join to center st of 2nd small petal of the 1st pansy (to join, drop loop form hook, insert in st, pick up loop and pull through), * sc in same space on center., ch 4, join in 4th dc of next small petal of same pansy, ch 3, 2 dc in middle of next shell on center, ch 3, sl st in top of last dc for picot, 2 dc in same space on center, ch 3, join to 13th dc of 1st small petal of next pansy, ch 4, sc in middle dc of next dc group on center, join to center st of next small petal of same pansy, repeat from * all around, ending to correspond, join, cut thread, sew last pansy to 1 st pansy at edge.

Note; In this project you will be crocheting in the loops of both sides of the foundation chain I have referred to all loops as chains, but remember there will be 8 loops that have stitches in the first round.  Do not join rounds, this is an amigurumi project.  Amigurumi is very forgiving, so if you project has more or less stitches when finished it will not matter, and my ferrets have never once complained if I have to increase or decrease to make one side fit to the next side.

Make 3 sides in 3 different colors.  Ferrets like contrast, (I put white, a dark color and a medium color for contrast) but these can be made from your scrap yarn for any pet.  Use a size G or H hook (larger hook for a larger toy), or experiment with 2 strands or by adding more of the oval shapes to make any shape or size toy.

Rnd 1: Chain 5, 2 sc in 2^nd chain from hook, 1 sc in next 2 chains, 5 sc in last chain (I usually put 3 in one side and 2 in the other side of the end chain this will put you on the opposite side of the foundation chain) 1 sc in each of next 2 chains 3 sc in last chain,  (do not join) total 14 sc.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 sc in each of the next 3 sc, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sc, 2 sc in next st, total of 20 sc.

Rnd 3:  1 sc in next st *2 sc in next 1 sc in next* repeat from * to * one time.  1 sc in each of next 4 sts, 2 *sc in next, 1 sc in next repeat from * to * twice.   1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 sc in next sl st in next stitch and cut yarn leave about 16 to 20 inches or leave loop in work for joining later total of 26 sts.

Joining notes:  Make 3 different colors and join with sl st to one long side of the next piece. By using the long tail or by leaving the yarn attached you can join with less yarn ends to tie off later and determine which of your color choices you want to use to join. 

Joining:  Insert hook into loop of first oval, hold 2 oval pieces wrong sides together, chain 1 insert hook into the back loop of each of the 2 different color oval, sl st, repeat for half of the stitches.  This joins 2 sides in half of the stitches.   With hook still in work, you can now attach the 3^rd piece to the 2^nd piece in the same method.   Add a small amount of stuffing and close the remaining side in the same manner.

Add a small amount of stuffing when piece is almost closed. 

I usually don't work in the ends but once I have attached 2 oval together I let the ends hang out for tassels on each end of the toy.  I simply tie the lose yarn ends together add bells or other bits of ribbon, and crochet thread is great for attaching bells.  

Embellishments: My ferrets seem to like bells and bits of yarn as a tassel for the ends of these toys.  I have used crochet thread to tie the bells on to the ends of the toys.

Crossed Shells

Based on a multiple of 7 chain plus 2.

This stitch is a simple crossed shell design.

Note: When working the double crochet of the crossed shell, remember

         to pull up a long loop.

Row 1:  1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * skip 3 ch, 3 dc in next ch, ch 1, 3 dc in last ch of ch-3 just skipped for a crossed shell, skip 2 ch, 1 Sc

             in next ch, repeat from * across, ch 3, turn.

Row 2:  2 dc in first Sc, * 1 sc in next ch-1 sp in center of shell groups, 3 dc in sp after

              next sc, ch 1, 3 dc in sp before same sc, repeat from  * across, end 1 sc in last

              ch-1 sp, 3 dc in last sc, ch 1, turn.

Row 3:  * 3 dc in sp after next sc, ch 1, 3 dc in sp before same sc, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp,

              repeat from * across, end 1 sc in top of turning-ch, ch 3, turn.

Repeat Rows 2 & 3 for pattern.

This would work up great using rug yarn and a large hook. Or a scarf, using a 2 ply or 3 ply yarn.
