5 by  6 blocks
This pattern is worked over 15 stitches

For this I used five stitches knit group, purl group, then another 5 knit, but changed the blocks every 6th row.








Row 1: p 5, k 5, p 5
Row 2: k 5, p 5, k 5
Row 3: p 5, k 5, p 5
Row 4: k 5, p 5, k 5
Row 5: p 5, k 5, p 5
Row 6: k 5, p 5, k 5
Row 7: p 5, k 5, p 5
Row 8: k 5, p 5, k 5
Row 9: p 5, k 5, p 5
Row 10: k 5, p 5, k 5
Row 11: p 5, k 5, p 5
Row 12: k 5, p 5, k 5

Repeat rows 1 to 12 for pattern for desired length

Row 2:  k 3, sm, * P 4, wrn to m 1 *. repeat from * across row to last 3 stitches , sm, k 3

Row 3: k 3, pm, * drop the "made" st of the previous  row, wl.fwd to m 1, sl 1, k 3, psso *. repeat from * across row to last 3 stitches , sm, k 3

Row 4: k 3, sm, purl to last 3 stitches, sm, k 3.

Repeat rows 1 to 4 3x more, then knit 6 rows even, removing markers on last row.

Foundation Row: Work 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch to end. Ch 1, turn.


Row 1: 1 sc in back loop each of the first 2 hdc, * ch 2, skip 2 hdc, 1 sc in back loop of each of next 2 hdc; rep from *, ending 1 sc in back loop of last hdc, 1 sc in top of turning ch. Ch 2, turn.

Row 2: Skip first sc, 1 hdc in next sc, *2 hdc under ch-2, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sc; rep from * to end. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for pattern.

Seeding rows:
Row 1: K 5, k 1, p 1 across row to last 4 stitches, sm, k 4

Row 2: K 4, k 1, p 1 across row to last 5 stitches, sm, k 5

Repeat rows 1 and 2 3x for a total of 6 rows.

Now: 
Row 7: k 5, * K 1, wrn to m1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 3, k 2 tog, m 1 *,  repeat from * to * across row, end k 1, sm k 4.

Row 8: k 4, purl to last 5 stitches, sm, k 5.

Row 9: K 5, * K 2, m 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, k 2 tog, m 1, kl* ,  repeat from * to * across row, end k 1, sm k 4.

Row 10:  k 4, purl to last 5 stitches, sm, k 5.

Row 11: K 5, * K 3, m 1, slip 1, k 2 tog, psso, m 1, k 2 *, repeat from * to * across row, end k 1, sm, k 4. 

Row 12:  k 4, purl to last 5 stitches, sm, k 5.

From Learn How Book #170 A 1952 The Cotton Spool Company (Coats & Clarks)

MATERIALS:

CHADWICK'S RED HEART KNITTIING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E.232: 3 skeins (1 oz. "Tangle­ Proof Pull-Out Skeins) of No. 789 Bittersweet OR color of you choice.

Milwards "Phantom" Aluminum Knitting Needles or Clark's O.N.T.

Plastic Knitting needles 1 pair No. 4 (31/2 mm. size) and 1 pair No. 6 ( 4 1/2 mm. size).
] ½  yards of black velvet ribbon 5/8 inch wide.

With the size 6  knitting needles, cast on 100 sts.

1st row: * K 2, P 2. Repeat from* across. Repeat this row until piece measures 10 inches in length. Change to No. 4 knitting needles and work in ribbing for 2 more inches. Bind off,  knitting the k sts and purling the p sts. Sew side edges together to form back seam. Sew the center 8 inches of ribbon around center of hat, then make a 4-loop bow as illustrated. Roll top of hat to meet ribbon.
