My
Pink Shawl
By N Banks
By N Banks
Shawl at 28 inches
Finished at right
Update:
Finally I finished the shawl. Its about 31
inches wide and about 75 inches long. I also used almost all the four skeins
of yarn. I like to wrap up with it in
the cool evenings when sitting outside.
Sometimes I like to light some candles and just sit, it’s relaxing that way. I also am using size 9 circular knitting needles, and just knit back and forth. I placed the row marker on one end of the needles, and it works fine that way. If you want it done faster you could use a size 10 needle, but you would also need more yarn. It has taken me a lot longer to knit it because my shoulders hurt, and I have to stop knitting for awhile. Rats!

I
decided I wanted it warm, and I also wanted it wide and long. I didn’t use lace
stitches or yarn overs in this design like I did for the cables and lace shawl http://ninasatmyhouse.blogspot.com/2015/11/cables-and-lace-shawl-2013-mystery-knit.html.
But I didn’t want it plan or simple another shawl I did, My Winter Shawl http://ninasatmyhouse.blogspot.com/2013/10/my-winter-shawl.html or like the Lace Rib Shawl or Scarf Pattern I did some time ago.

But
I didn’t want to have to read a pattern for every row either. This one I just knit, no reading of a written pattern row by row. I used stitch patterns I liked and
cables I already have done to make it easy and simple for me. I wanted to just
look at the stitch and the row number on the counter and knit, and I knew that
every so many rows some of the stitch patterns would change. All patterns used are just plain knit and
purl, no yarn overs, no slipping of stitches, passing stitches over. Just plain
and simple knitting.
The
problem I have is with the color of the yarn I choose, lol. I picked one that
was bright and cheerful, but when I went to take pictures of it for this article,
the pink didn’t show up right, so I had to take picture after picture to find
one that would show up good and clear or work the stitch in another color so
that it did show up clear. Note to self,
next time stay with the plain colors, less work!
Pattern 1:
Row
1: knit 1, purl 1, knit 1.
Repeat
this row for pattern.
The
yellow seeding stitch on the right is from the Beginner's Cabled Scarf and was
used as an edging. http://ninasatmyhouse.blogspot.com/2015/09/beginners-cabled-scarf-pattern-update.html.
In this pattern I used it in the body of the shawl, several times just because I like the way the stitch looks so that I could split up other groups of stitches.

Pattern 2
This
is the first time I have used this stitch, but it goes well with the seeding
stitch I have used in other places on the shawl. And it does change after the 6th
row, first block is knit, and the second block is a seed stitch,
the third block is seeding again. See the picture. Then starting with the 7th, the first block is now the seeding, 2nd is knitted, and the third is seeding again. You can see this in the picture at the left.

Pattern 3
Cable. This pattern
is worked over 10 stitches.
For this
cable stitch I used it on a background of 2 purl stitches on each side, for a
total of 10 stitches and held the cable needle in front (left), the one on the
right shows a cable stitch but with the cable needle held at the back like I
did for the beginner’s cabled scarf (http://ninasatmyhouse.blogspot.com/2015/09/beginners-cabled-scarf-pattern-update.html)
Row 1: knit 2, purl 6, knit 2

Row 4: purl 2, knit 6, purl 2
Row 5: knit 2, purl 6, knit 2
Row 6: purl 2, slip 3 stitches to the cable needle and hold at front of
work, K 3, then knit the 3 stitches from the cable needle, purl 2
Pattern

I
love this stitch. Here I have worked it over 6 stitches, the knit stitch with
the purl stitch on the right and left side really help the two twisted stitches
in the middle to show up. Picture, close up of the two stitches twisted
on the left, right shows all six stitches used. Most of the time, the twisted
stitch is used with just purl on each side of it
ROW 1: p 1, k 1, p 2, k 1, p 1. This is done every back row.
ROW 2: k 1, p 1, skip 1 stitch, but DO NOT remove it from the left hand needle, knit the next stitch, the new loop is on the right hand needle, now knit the first stitch that you skipped, it is now on the right hand needle and just let the two stitches on the left hand needle drop., p 1, k 1. This is done every front row.

Materials:
1 pair size
9 knitting needles
3 to 4
skeins Red Heart Super Saver 8oz. depending on the length you want. I used 4.
16 stitch
markers
Cable
needle, I used a U shaped one, keeps the stitches from falling off the needle.
Row
counter, this is a must.
Note: slip
markers as you come to them. I have used them between the groups of stitches.
Using 3 skeins of yarn should made it about 60 inches long, using 4 would make
it about 72 inches long.

Good Morning Nina,
I just needed to know what the sm means in the pattern. I think the pm means Place Marker, but does the sm mean Stitch Marker? It would be helpful to have the Abbreviations included into the pattern posting. Thank you, Barb
it means to slip marker, its for marker all the different stitches used in the pattern.
Thank you very much for the clarification. Much appreciated. Barbara Ann
Thank you, Nina
Hugs and Blessings,
Kim
