My Mom's Oxtail Soup
another recipe from the 1950's!

2 # oxtails flour 3 T oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 large clove of garlic pressed or minced
2 cups rich beef stock
4 cups water
1 teaspoon leaf oregano
1/2 teaspoon leaf thyme
salt pepper to taste
1 can tomatoes (med size)
2 cups diced carrots and potatoes
1/2 large bell pepper, seeded, cored and chopped
1/2 cup minced fresh parsley.
1 1/2 cups shredded cabbage.

1. roll the tails in the flour and brown in the oil with the
garlic and onions.

2. Add broth, water, thyme, oregano, salt and pepper. boil.

3. reduce heat, simmer, covered until tails are tender about 2
1/2 hours.

4. Break up tomatoes, add with rest of ingredients, simmer,
covered for 30 min. Serves 5 to 6.

Double Crochet = dc
Half Double Crochet = hdc
5 Loop Puff Stitch = PS

Chain, 22.

Row 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work 1 Sc in each ch
across, ch 2, turn.

Row 2: * yo, insert hook in next Sc, yo, draw up a loop, yo,
insert hook in next sc, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw
through all 5 loops, ch 1, (5 loop puff stitch made)
1 dc in next ch, repeat from * across, ch 2, turn.
( 8 dc, turning chain counts as 1 dc.)

Row 3: 1 hdc in each st and in each ch-1 space across, end 1 hdc
in top of turning-ch, ch 2, turn.

Row 4: Working in back loops, 1 hdc across row, 1 hdc in turning
Chain, ch 2, turn.

Repeat rows 2-4 4 times, after the last repeat, do not turn, ch 2.

Edging:
Row 1: 3hdc in same place, hdc evenly spaced around dishcloth, placing
3 hdc in each corner, join with slip stitch, ch 3

Row 2: 1 dc in same place, *skip 1 hdc, sc in next hdc, ch 3, 1dc in
Same place, repeat from * around, join with slip stitch, fasten
Off, weave in the ends.

Row 1: (wrong side): Work l sc into 2nd ch from hook, l sc into each ch to end, turn.

Row 2: 3ch (count as 1 dc), * skip 2sc, work 1tr into next sc, working behind last tr work 1 dc into each of 2 skipped Sc, 1 dc in next sc,. Repeat from * to end, turn.

3rd row: 1 ch, work 1 sc into each st to end placing last Sc into 3rd of 3ch at beg of previous row, turn. (17sc )

Vertical columns of garter stitch

Work with a multiple of 6 stitches. Size 8 knitting needles.

For sample, cast on 18 stitches.

Rw 1: (right side, but I liked the back side better, and the picture is taken of the back side): *P 3, K 3*, repeat across row.

Rw 2: Knit all stitches.

Repeat these 2 rows for pattern.

This pattern stitch is an easy one, you could use as is for coasters, or add a crocheted edging to it. You could also cast on more stitches for a dishcloth, again adding a knitted or crocheted edging. You could also use the pattern as is on very large needles, say like a size 13 to 17 knitting needles, add 6 extra stitches for edging, say a seed stitch, keeping out side 3 stitches in a seed stitch and the center 18 in the pattern.

The Widow’s Protector

The Widow’s Protector by Stephanie Newton


I don’t remember reading many books by this author, but if she writes them half as good as this one, I want to find more by her. This book was so good, I was woken up at night at about 2 am and finished the book. If you like stories about firefighters and loads of action, then you will want to read this book. Great suspense, great characters. Unbelievable fire scene, it was like being there. This book is the forth in the series, next up is The Back Sheep’s Redemption. Can’t wait.

Yarn-One color, G size hook,

Foundation ch: multiples of 9 + 8
PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS.

This stitch would make a great afghan. Using 4 ply yarn, made a foundation
chain as wide as you want your afghan, making sure you have multiples of 9,
then add 8 more chains. Using finer yarn, you could also make a lovely
lightweight shawl, or using cotton yarn, (ch 35) and make a dishcloth. You can
even make a lap afghan for that favorite grandmother. Just crochet an edging
around it.

Keep crocheting until you have Half the length you want. If you look at the
sample you will notice that is has a scalloped edge at the ending. To make
the afghan, etc. make it half the length you want, then do the ending row,
reattach yarn on the beginning chain, and do the second half of the afghan.

Or make a panel of ch. 35, and make it half as long as you want, finish it
off, make the second half, and then using a second color, make an edging
around it. Then take the edging color, and make a second panel the same
way, and use the first color around it for an edging, then sew the two together,
keep going this way until you have the afghan and the width you want it.

You can use any size hook you want, just remember, the finer the yarn, the
smaller the hook. If you look at the stitch, you will notice that it is a different
version of the Crazy Stitch.

For the sample, I've used cotton yarn, a G hook and make a dishcloth.

Row I (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch. across, Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc in first sc, sk next 2 sc, in next sc work (sc, ch 3, 3 dc); * (sk next 2
Sc, sc in next sc, ch 3) twice; sk next 2 sc, in next sc work (sc, ch 3, 3
dc); rep from * to last 3 sc; sk next 2 sc, sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Sc in first sc, in next ch-3 sp work (sc, ch 3, 3 dc); * (sc in next ch-3 sp,
ch 3) twice; in next ch-3 sp work (sc, ch 3, 3 dc); rep from * to last 2 Sc;
sk next sc, sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.

Rep Row 3 for half the desired length you need.

Last Row: Sc in first sc; * sc in next 2 dc, 3 sc in next dc; 2 sc in next ch-3 sp;
sc in next sc, (2 sc in next ch-3 sp, sc in next sc) twice; rep from *
to last 3 dc; sc in next 2 dc, 3 sc in next dc; 2 sc in next ch-3 sp; sc
in last 2 sc. Fasten off.
