 Row 1: ch 4 or 5, join, ch 3, (1 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) into loop, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3, skip first dc, 1 dc in back loop of next dc, (2 dc, ch 3, 2dc) in ch-3 sp, 1 dc in back loop of next dc, 1 dc in back loop of 3rd ch of turning chain,  turn.

Row 3: Ch 3, skip first dc, 1 dc in back loop of each dc, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in ch-3 sp, 1 dc in back loop of each dc, with last dc in back loop of 3rd chain of turning chain, turn.

Repeat row 3 for length desired, with 4 dc added in each row.

Last row: ch 3, 1 dc in back loop of each dc, 6 dc in 3 ch sp, 1 dc in back loop of each dc, with last dc in back loop of 3^rd ch of turning ch, fasten off for sample.

Or you can use cotton yarn and keep going added 4 dc's each row until you have a dishcloth the size you would like.

Update:

I have made many scarves using this stitch, from 4 to 6 stitches. Love it.
I really like using the  variegated yarns for it. I just finished a scarf with
a matching hat. On the hat I used a 4 stitch repeat. The scarf I used a 5
stitch because of the yarn.

These are some entrelac scarves I made, some for a gifts and the other for myself. I had purchased a book called "Entrelac, The essential Guide to Interlace Knitting"  by Rosemary Drysdale so that I could learn to do this stitch. I started reading, and found out there are lots of stitches, plain, fancy, purl, knit, even lace ones. She gives very clear and easy to follow directions along with lots of pictures to help you learn the basic stitch and many projects using a few of the stitches. If you are wanting to learn this stitch, and its many uses, then this book is well worth the cost of $24.95.

 

The scarves are knit (main side) and purled on the back, I liked using a variegated yarn with this type of stitch, the stitch shows up really nice. I used a 6 stitch repeat, and not the 8 stitch the book had shown, but I think you could use any combine of stitches, five to even 10 and it would look great. I used the six stitches because of the size of needles and the thickest of the yarn. So it would depend on your yarn you use. I think if I did one of the lace stitches, I would want to use a plain yarn so that the lace would show up really nice. This one to the right is one I made for my self out of a baby yarn.

 

 I have made about four or five now, all using the six stitch repeat, and will make more maybe using either a 7 or 8 stitch repeat and maybe try one of the lace stitches. The one to the left is one I made for my granddaughter also using the 6 stitch. It was made using a thin 2 ply yarn and size 8 needles. The one below is a gift and also using the 6 stitch, I really think it looks nicer using it. It was made of sock yarn on size 9 needles.

Christmas gift for a friend

 

This is a Christmas gift for a friend. I am using a Entrelac 5 stitch

repeat and 10 1/2 wooden knitting needles. I am using Loops and

 Threads Charisma in Dragonfly. I got it on sale at Michaels for

$3.00 a skein. The scarf is longer now, about 32 inches, and I have

 used one skein so far. I ended up using 3 1/2 skeins so for less than 12.00
I had a scarf and matching end.

It's about 48 inches now, and I have used 2 skeins of yarn, just starting on the 3 skien, I want to make it a bit longer. I want to make a hat for it too,but will have to make it up as I go, no pattern.

I ended up making it 58 inches long. I used about 2 1/2 skeins. I started on the hat, using a 4 entrelac stitch, not sure what I am going to do,  but will work until it fits around the head. I have

some solid colored yarn in a hunter green to use with it.

 Below is the hat.  I made it long enough to fit around the hat, then sewed the ends together. Then I picked up stitches around the top of the hat, and knit them long enough to fit over the very top of head. Closed it. I used a single crochet around the bottom of hat, then did a back
wards crochet stitch around it. I made the top and bottom of hat in a
hunter green.

Shuttle and ball.

Wind Flamingo on shuttle and use Yellow for ball.

R, 8 ds. p,  8 ds, cl r, turn.

Ch, 5 ds, 4 p sep by 5 ds, 5 ds. join to p of r, 5 ds, turn.

*R, 2 ds, 8 p sep by 2 ds, 2 ds, cl r, turn.

Ch, 5 ds, turn.

R, 8 cls, p, 8 ds, cl r, turn.

Ch, 5 ds. join to 1 st free p of opposite ch, 5 ds. 3 p sep by 5 ds, 5 ds, join to p of small r, 5 ds, turn.

Repeat from * for length desired. Sew to item.

 4x4 box stitch

Multiples of 8

For sample cast on 24 stitches

Row 1: Knit 4, Purl 4 across row.

Rows 2, 3, 4: repeat row 1

Row 5: Purl 4, knit 4

Rows 6, 7, 8: repeat row 5.

Repeat these 8 rows until desired length.

There are many combinations of the box stitch. Just reminder at if you want your box stitch 6 x 6, then you need multiples of 12.  For a 12 x 12 box stitch, then you need multiples of 24.

A 6 x 6 box stitch would read:

Row 1: knit 6, purl 6.

Rows 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 repeat row 1

Row 7: Purl 6, Knit 6

Rows 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 repeat row 7.

Just watch your rows and multiples and you can do any combination that you want.

R, 6 ds, join to last p of last r, 3 ds, 5 p sep by 3 ds, 1ds, small p, 9 ds, join to small p just made, 1 cls, 6  p sep by 3 ds, 6 ds, cl r.
